I'm not gonna spend too much time on this one since it's been all but confirmed like twice over now, but Hugh Jackman recently confirmed Darren Aronofsky as the director of the sequel to X-men Origins: Wolverine...which really just needs to be called Wolverine 2 from here on out. That title is longer than Wolvie's middle claw.
In an interview with Vulture, Jackman seems particularly amped for the future of the franchise and the sequel in particular....
Jackman: .This is Wolverine. This is not Popeye. He’s kind of dark… But, you know, this is a change of pace. Chris McQuarrie, who wrote The Usual Suspects, has written the script, so that’ll give you a good clue. [Aronofsky’s] going to make it fantastic. There’s going to be some meat on the bones. There will be something to think about as you leave the theater, for sure.
I don't know what he's talking about. I had PLENTY to think about at the end of the first flick. Like "Who the hell was that character pretending to be Deadpool"? And "How can a movie about a guy with claws and a metal skeleton be so damned boring"? "That can't be the same Sabretooth I saw in X-men, can it? Nooooo." "Who greenlit this crapstick"?
To be fair that film didn't have nearly the filmmaking cred this one does, and Wolvie's classic Japan storyline is arguably the best to have adapted for the big screen. So even though Fox is involved I'm reasonably excited that Jackman isn't blowing smoke when he said the following...
Jackman: This is, hopefully for me, going to be out of the box. It’s going to be the best one, I hope…Well, I would say that, but I really do feel that, and I feel this is going to be very different
I hope he's right.
