Paramount feels the need for speed! Top Gun sequel headed our way

I maintain that the most significant contribution Top Gun has made to our culture has been as the butt of spoofs and jokes. Who can forget Quentin Tarantino's hilarious deconstruction of its homoerotic subtext in 1994's Sleep With Me, a forgettable movie by any other measure. We've sorta known that moves were being made behind the scenes for a potential sequel to Tony Scott's 1986 action classic, with producer Jerry Bruckheimer even commenting on about the possibility earlier this year. Now it looks like Top Gun 2 is pulling out of the runway and preparing to take off, as Paramount Pictures has reportedly made offers to Bruckheimer and director Tony Scott proceed ahead, with hopes of creating a brand new franchise. Isn't that always the hope?

The script would be written by blazing hot screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie(The Usual Suspects), who's stock has skyrocketed after a highly regarded draft for Wolverine 2, starring Hugh Jackman and taking place in Japan.

But what would a Top Gun movie be without Tom Cruise? Supposedly, Cruise has already agreed to reprise his role as hotshot fighter pilot Peter "Maverick" Mitchell, but only in a reduced less "obvious" role. An insider source reports that McQuarrie has found a way to incorporate Maverick into the plot. Expect him to turn up as a flight instructor or something.

If they want to make it really cool they'll find a way to get Goose back into the mix as well. I'd like to see McQuarrie pull THAT off! And no fair using flashbacks!

It'll be interesting to see how they pull off a movie like this nowadays. With most of our military's fighter jets automated, wars are no longer fought in through aerial dogfights pitting one pilot against another. The only way is to take the route of an admittedly awful movie like Stealth, which basically ignores reality and goes for pure adrenaline. Or they could deal with the repercussions of the world we now live in. I think the second option is for more interesting, but probably makes for a less action intensive flick. This is Jerry Bruckheimer we're talking about here. Expect something closer to Stealth.  Or they'll finally ditch the pretense and take an all-out Brokeback Mountain approach. That....would be awesome. Don't count on it, though.
