Peter Jackson reveals the cast of THE HOBBIT

It didn't take long after The Hobbit was finally put into motion last week that we're getting the first announcements by longtime LOTR director, Peter Jackson. So what's he got to say right out of the gate? He's revealing a large portion of the cast that will be accompanying Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins. The list is as follows, taken from Slashfilm...

  • (MI-5, Captain America) as Thorin Oakenshield, leader of the Dwarves, whose grandfather ruled the Lonely Mountain settlement destroyed by Smaug.
  • (Being Human) and Rob Kazinsky (EastEnders) as Kili and Fili, nephews of Thorin.
  • (Secretariat) as Dwalin, blue-bearded, first to arrive at the home of Bilbo Baggins.
  • John Callen as Oin, skillful fire-maker. Brother of Gloin.
  • Stephen Hunter (All Saints) as Bombur, the fat, sleepy and slow member of Thorin’s company.
  • (King Kong) as Dori, strongest of the Dwarves, who carries Bilbo on his back at one point.
  • (The Strip) as Gloin, brother of Oin, initially suspicious of Bilbo’s worth, but eventually convinced. Father of Gimli from The Lord of the Rings.
Ian McKellan and Andy Serkis are also expected to return and reprise their roles as Gandalf and Gollum respectively.

I'll be the first to admit that I don't recognize most of these folks, with the exception of McTavish and Armitage. I still wish there was some way Jackson could fit the mysterious Tom Bombadil into the story. I know he wasn't in The Hobbit book, only making his appearance in two chapters of the LOTR trilogy, but it'd be cool to see how he'd be portrayed.
