Steven Spielberg to direct Robopocalypse

Not completely unexpected news, but good to get some confirmation. Steven Spielberg has finally committed to helming the big screen adaptation of Daniel Wilson's upcoming sci-fi novel, Robopocalypse. Spielberg's been semi-attached to the job for months, with Drew Goddard working on the script ever since Dreamworks bought the rights.

This will be the director's first sci-fi flick since 2005's War of the Worlds. Good lord let's hope it turns out better than that stinker.

Robopocalypse has a very simple story premise, one that should appeal to fans of not only sci-fi but big budget action blockbusters: The human race is forced to fight in order to survive a violent robot uprising.

Shooting is set to being in January 2012, with a release date some time in 2013.

Wilson's novel is set to release in June 2011. Another case of a story being optioned before the book is even finished. I hate that, but oh well.
