Carey Mulligan officially cast as Daisy in The Great Gatsby

This is one of those times where I feel like a movie is being made just for me. I've been eagerly covering any bit of news I can find on Baz Luhrmann's take on The Great Gatsby, which will star Leonardo Dicaprio and Tobey Maguire in the adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic. After a search for who would play Gatsby's love interest, Daisy Buchanan, brought up names like Rebecca Hall, Keira Knightley, and Amanda Seyfried, Luhrmann has settled on a late entrant into the running: Carey Mulligan.

The Oscar nominated actress tested for the role back on November 2nd, and was informed of Luhrmann's decision while at a fashion event in New York. Mulligan could most recently be seen in Oliver Stone's Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps as the daughter of Gordon Gekko, and in Mark Romanek's Never Let Me Go.

I'm obviously extremely happy by this news, as Mulligan is one of those actresses I feel can play whatever she wants whenever. I'll be very curious to see how she fares as the sexy and somewhat conniving Daisy. My favorite character was always her best friend, Jordan Baker, so now my interest turns to seeing who gets that part. Actually I'd love to see Amanda Seyfried get that one.

The above photo was provided by Deadline, sent to them by Luhrmann himself. It features Mulligan as Daisy from the November 2nd audition. She definitely looks the part.
