Sure Shots: New Year's Eve; Hayden Panettiere; Guy Pearce

* The cast of New Year's Eve, the Garry Marshall directed spinoff of Valentine's Day, has added what I'm guessing will be the token old folks for the film as Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer are in talks to join. Rumors are that Hilary Swank and Ashton Kutcher will be signing on as well. Eventually every actor you've ever known will have a role.

* Hayden Panettiere and Nikki Reed will be starring in Downer's Grove, the Bret Easton Ellis adapted film based on Michael Hornburg's 2001 novel. If you know Ellis's work(The Rules of Attraction, American Psycho) then you know this isn't some cutesy teen flick. The story involves a suburban high school in which one senior dies a horrible death at the end of each year. Nelson McCormick(Prom Night) is set to direct.

* Guy Pearce and Rebecca Hall are set to star in James Marsh's Shadow Dancer, based on Tom Bradby's novel about a former IRA terrorist turned MI5 informant. I'm loving the casting, as Hall and Pearce are two of the best working right now, but what I'm excited about is Marsh. His 2008 documentary, Man on Wire, was the best I've seen in years, and the way he constructed it to feel like a heist flick was ingenious. He also did impressive(and very different tonally) work on the Red Riding Trilogy earlier this year.
