Thinking about the superhero flicks we have on the horizon, perhaps the one with the most question marks is the sequel to
X-men Origins: Wolverine
. Not because Wolverine is a lesser character than Iron Man, Green Lantern, or Thor, but because it's expected to make us forget about last year's piss poor flick. Adding Darren Aronofsky was a step in the right direction, but even his hiring seemed strange and a weird fit with the aggressive Canadian mutant.
We've known for awhile now that the story, based on a supposedly outstanding script by Christopher McQuarrie, would
be centered in Japan and closely follow the classic 1982 story by Frank Miller and Chris Claremont. Wolverine ventures to the land of the rising sun where he falls in love with Mariko Yashida, the daughter of a powerful yakuza boss. What we're learning, based on an interview Aronofsky gave to
Hitfix, is that this will not be a direct sequel to X-men origins, but a one-shot story completely separate. He also revealed the title of the film:
The Wolverine.
Simple and awesome. The first thought I had is how it immediately makes me think of Aronofsky's
The Wrestler
, and I'm hoping there will be that same introspective look at what makes violent, self destructive men tick. It's also a good idea for them to get as much separation from X-men Origins as possible. No questions about Deadpool, or Sabretooth, or any of that stuff.
