Now he's back and in the midst of what I like to think is a creative renaissance for Australian filmmaking. His latest film, The Way Back, is the story of a small group of prisoners attempting to escape from a Siberian gulag in 1940. The arduous journey home leads them across thousands of miles and five hostile territories. The film stars Colin Farrell, Saoirse Ronan, Ed Harris, Jim Sturgess and Mark Strong. After a limited run in Los Angeles in December, expect a somewhat larger roll out on January 21st, 2011. Let's hope we all get a chance to check it out because the trailer has me hooked.

Trailer Time: The Way Back, directed by Peter Weir
We haven't seen much from Peter Weir in what seems like forever. The Australian director's last feature was the grandiose Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, a flick which grew on me after I was initially underwhelmed. I got a thing about boats. Before that, Weir directed two of my all-time favorites, The Truman Show
(starring Jim Carrey) and Witness
(with Harrison Ford).
