James Mangold has had a pretty up and down career thus far. While movies like Girl, Interrupted, Walk the Line, and 3:10 to Yuma have been pretty well regarded, he's got some pretty dark stinkers hanging around also. Not the least of which was Knight and Day, which was so bad it managed to make Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz look like rank amateurs. With the success of Yuma, Mangold appears ready to jump right back into the Wesern genre once again with 'The Gunslinger'.
Right now the story sounds delightfully simple. An ex-Texas Ranger seeks revenge on the men who killed his brother, at least that's how it's described by The Hollywood Reporter. Sounds perfectly fine to me. No casting as of yet, but expect news to start trickling in on that soon. The plan by New Regency(who picked up the John Hlavin script from Warner Brothers) is to aim for a Spring shooting date.
