Brett Ratner must really have a thing for Hercules. I don't know if it's the whole loincloth thing or what, but he just can't seem to stay away. Last year the...controversial director was set to take on a film revolving around the "Prince of Power" for Universal Pictures, but it ultimately fell through when he decided to make Tower Heist instead. Then a couple of months ago when MGM was just peeking it's head out from under the bankruptcy sheets, word came out that they were also keen on a Hercules project. Now here we are today, with Ratner in talks with MGM to helm. It's almost like he never turned it away at all. He's even steven.
Different studio, different circumstances. This version of Herc would be based on the Radical Publishing comic book, Hercules: The Thracian Wars, and would likely bear that title as well. The story takes Hercules out of his usual home in Greece and places him in barbarian Thrace, where he takes on the task of training the King's ruthless army. The script will be by Ryan Condal. At one time, Peter Berg was attached to adapt the comic, but nothing came of it.
Is it possible that I could get through this without once mentioning how badly Ratner helped ruin the X-men movie franchise? Oops, I guess not. He's already been working on a Youngblood film that never seems to get underway, and now this, so clearly Ratner is determined to make another comic book movie whether he's any good at them or not. Thanks to Vulture for the info on this potential deal.
