I never was a big fan of the 1984 Footloose with Kevin Bacon. I didn't actually sit down and watch it until the 90s when the premise of a small town banning rock music and dancing was just too silly to swallow. That might've worked in the 80s when that type of rebellion against the stuffy older establishment was en vogue, but later on it just couldnt' hold up. And with that set up we have the remake by one of my favorite directors in Craig Brewer(Hustle and Flow, Black Snake Moan), where unfortunately he hasn't figured out that some ideas are best left to the dust bins of history.
The first real trailer for the film is now out, and immediately what we get is some horrible traffic accident that the adults in town blame on dancing. >sigh< Are we watching Breakin' or something? So they pass some sort of legislation banning rock music and public dancing, adding a crushing weight of stupidity to what should be a pretty light flick. Enter Kenny Wormald(?????) as big city kid Ren McCormack, who with his Max Caulfield Grease 2 haircut will dance the town back into normalcy. Julianne Hough is Ariel Moore, the rebellious small town daughter of the town reverend(Dennis Quaid). This just looks silly, but maybe silly enough to be entertaining for all the wrong reasons. The way Step Up 3 was.
