One of the stories to emerge out of the death of Osama Bin Laden was that Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal, the duo behind The Hurt Locker, had been secretly following the elite team for months in preparation of an upcoming film. It would tell the story of Seal Team 6's pursuit of the terrorist leader, but with his death Boal would have to do some working of the film's conclusion to include that fatal firefight. Originally going under the working title of Kill Bin Laden, it's been extremely quiet on that front for awhile now. We haven't anything about whether Joel Edgerton(Animal Kingdom, Warrior) would star, after being attached to it at one point. So what's going on? Is this even still happening? Or has the fact that half a dozen Seal Team 6 films are now in the works scared Bigelow and Co. off?
Apparently not, as Deadline reports the still untitled war flick now has a release date: October 12th 2012. That puts it smack dab in the middle of awards season, which you can bet is no accident. Expect Columbia Pictures to put the full power of their marketing department behind this one next year. The question is whether or not people will even care about this story. The unity and pride we all felt after Bin Laden's death has dissipated already, and movies about the "War on Terror" aren't any more popular.
