Wyatt Earp vs. Al Capone?? Harrison Ford set to star in Black Hats
The idea of a bunch of old west gunslingers taking on an alien invasion is oddball enough, but that's exactly what Harrison Ford is set to do in next week's Cowboys & Aliens. It's a collision of genres that should make that film one of the summer's great surprises, and looks to be the first time we've seen Ford in anything remotely decent in years. Now that he's back on the saddle, Ford doesn't appear to be slowing down, and his next gig is just as mind boggling, as he's set to star as Wyatt Earp in an adaptation of Black Hats: A Novel of Wyatt Earp and Al Capone.
Dig that title for a second. Wyatt Earp and Al Capone. No, this isn't some biography comparing the two historical figures, but a fictional tale in which the aging lawman is hired by Doc Holliday's widow to go to New York and help out Doc's son in defending his speakeasy from a menacing Capone. Sounds crazy enough to work. The book was published in 2007, the work of Max Allan Collins(Road to Perdition) under his pen name Patrick Culhane.
Kurt Johnstad(300), whose name seems to be everywhere lately(Man of Steel, Battle of Artemisia) is adapting the script. The most curious aspects of this remain: Who will direct? And who will play Al Capone? I'm just glad that Ford is making fun movies again. Alongside Morning Glory, Cowboys & Aliens, and now this he's clearly experiencing a career resurgence. [Variety]
