What has intrigued me most about alien invasion flick The Darkest Hour has less to do with it's plot than other factors. The Russian setting allows for marginally unique landmarks to get blown to smithereens. But also the cast, which features Emile Hirsch(Into the Wild), Olivia Thirlby(Juno), Max Minghella(The Social Network), and Rachael Taylor(See No Evil) are a young and generally exciting group. I mean really, it's just about how they survive the attack in Moscow after they've been stranded. Nothing new there.
Another element that has caught the attention of others but I didn't think was highlighted all that well in the trailer is the form taken by the alien hostiles. Well, they're basically invisible. Or pure energy beings or something. It seemed like a crappy way to save a few bucks at first by not having to have an army of extraterrestrials to show on screen, but this new motion poster for the film has changed my mind. In it, we see one of their poor victims trapped by one of the creatures, and watch as she's basically disintegrated by an unseen force. It's kinda cool, and could be another thing that sets the film apart. Check it out for yourself below, then keep an eye out for The Darkest Hour when it hits theaters(in 3D of course) on December 23rd...
