Trailer Time: Safe House, starring Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds
I almost forgot this came out while I was away, the long awaited first trailer for Safe House, from fast rising Swedish director, Daniel Espinosa. Well, he's fast rising if you listen to those who have been raving about his last film, Snabba Cash, for the last year or so. Not only did it serve as a springboard for star Joel Kinnaman(The Killing), but it looks like Espinosa is getting a warm embrace by Hollywood as well. Not everybody gets a chance to work with a duo like Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds in their American debut film.
Denzel plays a former CIA agent with a wealth of knowledge and secrets that makes him a very dangerous and wanted target. When he's finally captured and taken to an isolated safe house run by the bored agent played by Reynolds, it isn't long before mercenaries bust in and the fur start flying. Car chases, explosions, betrayal, and Denzel looking all evil and shit.
The first trailer for Safe House shows that Espinosa knows how to make a confident, solid Hollywood style thriller. Denzel seems to be playing a sortof combination of his Training Day and American Gangster roles, which is a good thing. Reynolds...well, he gets to bask in Denzel's glow a little bit. That's how it works for these young dudes who star opposite Denzel, whether it be Chris Pine or Ethan Hawke. They look good because Denzel elevates their game. I'm judging this solely on the trailer, so I could turn out to be wrong. What worries me the most is that we won't see nearly enough of Brendan Gleeson(In Bruges) or Vera Farmiga(Source Code), as both look to be playing pretty conventional characters....
