Can't really blame Robin Hardy for wanting to jump back into filmmaking after nearly twenty years out of the picture. Her greatest film, 1973's The Wicker Man, is considered a classic horror by many(myself included), but a few years ago Neil Labute and Nicolas Cage took a big fat dump on it with an atrocious remake that has become the butt of jokes ever since. What better way to reclaim what is yours than by expanding on the world you created?
Although she hasn't directed a film since 1986, Hardy has been working steadily as an author ever since. Her 2006 novel, Cowboys for Christ, forms the basis for The Wicker Tree, which is considered a "spiritual" successor to The Wicker Man, and follows many of the same themes of paganism and Christianity. The story follows Beth(Brittania Nicol), a former pop starlet turned gospel singer, and her fiance Steve, who travel to Glasgow, Scotland to spread Christianity to the "heathens". Once there, let's just say they're treated less than hospitably. Graham McTavish(The Hobbit), Clive Russell, and Christopher Lee(star of the original Wicker Man) co-star.
A new, blazing poster has been released ahead of the film's release on January 27th. For a glimpse at just how the internet has made comedy mincemeat out of The Wicker Man remake, just check out the below video.
