Sure Shots: Gerard Butler; 'Top Gun 2'; Jared Hess

* Gerard Butler just can't say no Robert Luketic, the director he worked with on the abysmal Katherine Heigl rom-com, The Ugly Truth. The Scottish actor is taking over for Eric Bana in Brilliant, Luketic's diamond heist caper about a guy who becomes the protege of an experienced female thief just before attempting the biggest theft of their careers. Production is set to kick off in May, so expect the female lead role to be cast soon. With Luketic behind the camera, does anybody think this won't look exactly like Killers? Who directed that? Oh....Robert Luketic. [Variety]

* Whether anybody likes it or not, that Top Gun sequel appears to be happening, and with the original film being remastered into 3D and re-released into theaters soon, Tom Cruise's homoerotic adventures of ace fighter pilot "Maverick" Mitchell will be introduced to a whole new audience. With Tony Scott already on board, the last we'd heard was that X-men: First Class writers Zach Stentz and Ashley Miller had taken over scripting duties. Apparently they were too busy or something, as they've now been replaced by Peter Craig(The Town). It's still unclear what direction the film will take, and exactly how involved Cruise will be.

* I was kinda hoping Jared Hess would stay in Hollywood's dusty old attic with other long forgotten directors, but apparently somebody has been reminded how "hot" he was about eight years ago. The Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre director has been off the map for awhile, but has made a comeback with an animated series based on his debut hit. Now he's stepping back into the feature film world as director of The Pet. Produced by Scott Rudin, the film has been in development over at Disney for a few years, and follows a guy who is abducted by aliens and turned into their personal household pet. Oh this sounds miserable. The original script was written by Matt Lieberman(the Short Circuit reboot), with the latest draft from Tim Dowling(This Means War). Variety reports that Hess now has total control over the project, meaning he may give the script another pass. Seriously, dude as a pet, getting walked around and peeing all over the place? Think Hess still has Jon Heder and Jack Black's numbers on speed dial?
