Viola Davis to play civil rights icon Barbara Jordan in new biopic
After being screwed royally out of a Best Actress win for her soulful turn in The Help, Viola Davis is jumping right into another racially charged film that may see her nominated yet again. Hopefully she won't have Meryl Streep to deal with next time.
Variety reports Davis will take on a biopic of civil rights icon, Barbara Jordan. Davis will star in the film, as well as producing it with her husband, with Paris Barclay(Don't Be a Menace to South Central) directing. Based on Mary Beth Rogers' biography, the story will cover the life and career of Jordan, who paved the way for African-American women in politics as the first to be elected to the House of Representatives. She was an integral figure during the Watergate hearings, and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1994 by President Bill Clinton.
Davis has been keeping herself busy, recently signing on to two projects that she definitely won't be earning any Oscar nominations for. She recently signed to star in Gavin Hood's adaptation of Ender's Game, and Beautiful Creatures from Richard LaGravenese.
