I've never really understood the indie fascination with Derick Martini, but he seems to have all the art-house geeks hoodwinked after his previous film, Lymelife. Sure it had a great cast, but the story was ripped out of those irritating, cookie cutter indie flicks from the 1990s. Nothing special about it at all.
His follow-up, while looking like the white trashiest of white trash films, will at least be disturbing enough to turn a few heads. Chloe Moretz stars as a small town girl who flees her deadbeat parents(packing heat, of course), hitchhiking her way to Las Vegas to lead a new life. On the way she runs into a bunch of screwed up characters, including a drug addicted thief played by Blake Lively, and a creepy drifter played by Eddie Redmayne.
A red band trailer has been released, and besides not really needing to be red band at all, one thing it tells me is that Moretz is totally out of place in a film like this. She's too good for it, having already shown more maturity than many actresses twice her age. What's the point of regressing with a hammy coming-of-age flick? The film debuted at Toronto last year, and nearly everybody said it stunk something fierce. Certainly looks like it, but we'll find out for sure when Hick hits VOD on May 8th, then in theaters just three days later....
