Jackie Earle Haley joins 'Robocop'; Jay Baruchel eyed for a role

It's kinda hard not to root for Jackie Earle Haley, as his comeback has been so remarkable. Starting out as a teen sex symbol for playing Kelly Leak in The Bad News Bears, he was basically persona non grata for a couple of decades before hitting it big with Little Children in 2006. Since then he's made the most of every opportunity, and now he's set for another scene stealing supporting turn.

Deadline reports Haley has joined Jose Padilha's Robocop remake, taking on the role of Maddox, the man who gives the cyborg soldier his military training. Joel Kinnaman is set for the titular lead, with Samuel L. Jackson, Hugh Laurie, Gary Oldman, and Abbie Cornish co-starring. There are apparently others still circling the film's final lead roles, with Jay Baruchel one of the frontrunners. He'd make for a perfect lab geek or something.

MGM is making all the right moves to ensure this remake isn't just some throwaway piece of crap like that awful Nightmare on Elm Street Haley was a part of. Robocop hits theaters on August 9th 2013. Haley will be seen next in Steven Spielberg's Lincoln, due out on November 9th.
