Comic-Con News: Trailer for 'Oz: The Great and Powerful' debuts

Covering Comic-Con in San Diego for Punch Drunk Critics this year is co-founder Travis Hopson, and today he brings us the official trailer for the upcoming Oz: The Great and Powerful, starring James Franco, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams ... babes, every one! (Well, not Franco. His too-common "homeless chic" look is not the one.)

We're all familiar with the wonderful world of Oz, aren't we? This adaptation of L. Frank Baum's 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is meant to be a prequel to the 1939 classic, focusing on struggling magician Oscar Diggs (Franco) and his traipse into Oz, where three witch sisters (Kunis, Weisz, and Williams) don't get along so well.

It looks like director Sam Raimi is sticking to some of the story elements we're all aware of - flying monkeys, a twister, black and white! - while also adding a bunch of unadulterated whimsy, like fang-toothed flowers and fairies, foggy forests, and some beastly demons. The costumes look great, too, especially Kunis's overly large red hat (so fashionable!) and Williams' longer-haired look. And watch until the end of the trailer for a glimpse of a witch's green hand ... the stuff Dorothy's nightmares are made of.

Also, nice of Raimi to remind us that he's the director of the "Spider-Man trilogy," effectively ignoring the recent "The Amazing Spider-Man." Stay classy, Raimi.

Disney's Oz: The Great and Powerful hits theaters next year, in March 2013, and will be released in 3D.
