The wait for Sam Riley to finally come into his own may finally be here. After wowing everybody in the Ian Curtis biopic, Control, pretty much every film he's done since has come and gone without much fanfare. He was good in Rowan Joffe's adaptation of Brighton Rock, but unfortunately nobody bothered to see it. All that may be about to change, as he's starring in the eagerly anticipated On the Road. He also has the vampire flick, Byzantium, and will appear with Angelina Jolie in the Sleeping Beauty retelling, Maleficent. Sounds like a formula for success.
According to ScreenDaily, next up for Riley is taking on the title role in Ivanhoe, based on the 1820 historical novel by Sir Walter Scott. The film is set just after the Third Crusades, with the Saxon nobleman earning the mistrust of his father for supporting the Norman king. There are some really cool, showy characters in the story, including King Richard, Robin Hood(here known as Locksley) and his Merry Men.
The film will be directed by Iain Softley, shooting the film in 65mm and marking his first feature since 2008's disappointing Inkheart.
