*UPDATE* Warner Bros. moving 'Gangster Squad' to January 2013?
*UPDATE* It's official. Warner Brothers has made the decision to bump Gangster Squad to January 11th 2013, with rewrites and reshoots planned in the meantime. Original story is below.*
Warner Brothers has been perplexed by how to handle their mobster flick, Gangster Squad, after the tragic shooting in Colorado. They made the right move by yanking the trailer, which featured a scene in which moviegoers were riddled with bullets. But then they decided to go even further by yanking the scene out of Ruben Fleischer's film completely, and taking on some rather extensive reshoots to make up for it. All this with the hope of maintaining the September 7th release date, which never really seemed possible. Fortunately, somebody there has finally realized it.
THR reports that the film may get pushed back to January 11th 2013 so that the proper pieces can be put into place for the reshoots. The cast would need to be reassembled, which considering the schedules of Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, and the rest of the cast may not be that easy. My hope is that between now and then Warner Brothers smartens up and leaves the scene intact, although at this point the plan is still move on without it. Will Beall, the cop turned writer who came up with the Gangster Squad script, is currently working on a way to revise the pivotal scene.
January 11th is pretty wide open at this point, as the only real competition is the Jeremy Renner/Gemma Arterton actioner, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters.
