It's going to be a busy few months for acclaimed South Korean director, Park Chan-Wook. He's just completed his English-language debut, Stoker, which should be hitting theaters next March. His classic vengeance tale, Oldboy, is in the process of being remade by Spike Lee, and now he's set to venture into an all-new genre in a project that's been languishing for years.
Variety reports that Chan-Wook is in talks to direct The Brigands of Rattleborge, featuring a 2006 Black List script by S. Craig Zahler and focusing on a group of bandits who use a thunderstorm as cover to rob a small town, with a doctor and sheriff seeking revenge. So why has the film been languishing in development Hell all of this time? Because of the ultra-violent content, which would mean a big star is needed to front the film and get it financed. Extreme violence? Big stars? Yep, this sounds like something Chan-Wook can knock out of the park.
No start date set for this one yet, but hopefully it'll get underway soon. As happy as I am to see Chan-Wook doing more stuff here in America, there's a part of me that wants to see him make make another film in Korea where he doesn't have to worry about our apparently delicate sensibilities.
