J.J. Abrams may push back 'Star Wars: Episode VII' release date
With J.J. Abrams signed, sealed, and delivered to direct Star Wars: Episode VII, our attention now turns to that 2015 release date Disney and LucasFilm had originally pegged for it. But one has to remember that date was set before there ever was a director, and it appears Abrams may not totally be down for it.
THR reports that Abrams hasn't committed to any firm release schedule, and that he may actually push the date back. This isn't totally a shock, as he'd certainly want to give himself as much time as possible for the development process to flow naturally without constraints. Abrams is still producing the third Star Trek film, has a few TV projects in the works, and remains on board for the next Mission: Impossible, so trying to fit something as massive as Star Wars amidst all of that would be virtually impossible.
What it does tell us is that Kathleen Kennedy was willing to bend the release schedule in order to accommodate Abrams, so they'll probably give him as wide a berth as he requires. He had to twist a few arms over at Paramount to complete Star Trek Into Darkness on his own terms, so its refreshing to see that may not be an issue now.
Waiting an extra year or two for Star Wars may not be that big of a deal. 2015 already has The Avengers 2 and possibly a Justice League film to contend with.
