Think about it, what was the closest thing Paul Giamatti's done that would count as a mainstream or tentpole feature? Does he have one? Rock of Ages, maybe? Nah. Even when he ventured into the world of comic book movies, it was to make the very un-mainstream American Splendor. Well, that's all about to change in as big a way as possible, as THR reports he's in talks to play the Rhino in The Amazing Spider-Man sequel.
The Rhino is one of Spider-Man's most consistent enemies, but also has been shown to be a sympathetic figure at times. Debuting way back in 1966 he's a former Russian thug, and not a very bright one at that, who allowed his skin to be bonded with a rhino skin that makes him invulnerable while also granting super-strength and enhanced speed. He's been on the side of the angels a few times, but inevitably always turns back to crime. It's apparently a role Giamatti has wanted for a long time as the character is one of his personal favorites.
Felicity Jones (Like Crazy), who was previously in the running for the Sharon Carter role in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, is also up for an unspecified part. Since they wouldn't be seeking Jones for a minor character, my best guess is that she could be Felicia Hardy, another of Peter Parker's early love interests, who later goes on to be the costumed antihero the Black Cat.
With Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, and Dane DeHaan, Marc Webb has an incredible cast to work with. Production begins in February for release on May 2nd 2014.
