Edgy 'Weird Science' remake in the works from '21 Jump Street' writer Michael Bacall

Of all the early John Hughes Brat Pack films, the one most out of left field, and thus my favorite, was Weird Science. The original 1985 teen comedy took many of Hughes' familiar high school themes and threw them in a blender with science fiction to create what I consider to be a true classic.Anthony Michael, some other guy, Bill Paxton, a young Robert Downey Jr., and a smokin' hot Kelly Lebrock starred in the story of two nerds who literally create the perfect woman, only to have it all go comically awry. The film's longstanding popularity led to a TV series that was actually pretty good, and now Universal thinks it's time for a big screen remake.

Before you start screaming "Is nothing sacred!!?!?, at least Universal is putting top shelf talent behind this one. Michael Bacall, who turned the potentially disastrous 21 Jump Street remake into a bonafide hit, is penning the script. Also having written Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and Project X, Bacall has an ear for genuinely youthful dialogue that should come in handy. Joel Silver is producing, and the goal is make an edgier R-rated film with a tone somewhere between 21 Jump Street and The Hangover? Say wha? Whatever.

This one may still be a ways off as a director needs to be found, not to mention two young stars to play the two lead geeks. It'll be interesting to see if they keep the fantastical stuff or go with an approach that's more grounded. So let's cue up the Oingo Boingo  and see how this new Weird Science shakes out. [Deadline]
