Watch the funny and sweet trailer for 'The Way, Way Back' with Steve Carell
While superhero films and $200M blockbusters will likely dominate the summer movie season, sometimes audiences are in the mood for something quieter. One of the biggest films to emerge out of the Sundance Film Festival was The Way, Way Back, a heartwarming coming-of-age comedy starring Steve Carell and Sam Rockwell. After a fierce bidding war, Fox Searchlight paid a hefty sum to snag the rights, and now that they've set it to go against the big boys this July, the marketing campaign begins in earnest with the first trailer.
Lest one think this will be another of Carell's goofy, likable characters, they may want to take a harder look. He plays the abusive boyfriend to Toni Collette, a single mother to her awkward son Duncan, played by Liam James. When the family goes off for a summer vacation at a resort town, Duncan begins to come into his own with the help of his friends at a nearby water park, led by an irresponsible manchild played by Rockwell. The embers of first love burn with a local girl (Annasophia Robb), and Duncan learns to stand up for himself and his mother.
The film marks the directorial debut of The Descendants writers Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, and they've gathered an impressive supporting bunch with Rob Corddry, Maya Rudolph, Amanda Peet, and scene-stealer Allison Janney. I caught the film at Park City and described it as a "funny and sweet" tale that "breaks free of its familiar trappings". The Way, Way Back hits theaters on July 3rd.
