Promising first track from Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Dan the Automator's Got A Girl collaboration
We don't normally post soundtracks around here, which is odd since I used to review hip-hop far more than movies long long ago. But in this case there's pretty good reason to switch up gears, and that's because it involves my favorite actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead and one of my favorite hip-hop producers ever, Dan the Automator.
About a year ago the Smashed and Death Proof actress teamed up with Dan Nakamura to form a group known as Got A Girl, and they recently opened up a Twitter account, setting the stage for the release of their first track, "You and Me". Those who have experienced the Automator's style before in Handsome Boy Modeling School, Deltron 3030, or the truly classic 'A Better Tomorrow' series, will recognize his influence right away. The beats are jazzy, splashed with a bit of French pop, and laced with a more sultry voice from Winstead than I was expecting. Sure, she's belted a tune on screen before, but this is completely different. Frankly, I love it, and can't wait to hear what they do next.
