Stylish and ominous trailer for 'Berberian Sound Studio' starring Toby Jones
We've been treated to a number of films over the last couple of years that were pretty unconventional looks at the art of making movies. Argo, Hugo, and The Artist were basically one big wet kiss to Hollywood, and "surprise surprise" the Academy voters ate them up. Audiences ate them up, as well, but it's unlikely they'll turn out in quite the same numbers for Peter Strickland's ominous Berberian Sound Studio, which is set in the world of 1970s Italian horrors.
Toby Jones (Infamous) stars as Gilderoy, a foley artist in Rome hired to sync the audio track for an Italian giallo film titled 'The Equestrian Vortex', about murders committed at an all-girl horse riding academy. As silly as the job may sound, Gilderoy soon begins to lose his grip on reality as he delves deeper into the surprisingly terrifying work. The use of mood and sound is captivating, and this looks like the sort of stylish, slow burn thriller that will have David Lynch fans salivating.
Also starring Tonia Sotiropoulou and Susanna Cappellaro, Berberian Sound Studio opens on June 14th.
