Universal moves forward with a 'Timecop' reboot

Universal has gone remake crazy recently, with Weird Science, The Mummy, Van Helsing, and others cooking at the studio right now. But they're far from done, and now it looks like one project they've been plotting for years is finally getting the green light. THR reports that a reboot of 1994's Timecop is headed to the silver screen.

Universal and Dark Horse Entertainment began kicking around the idea back in 2007, and it resurfaced again just a few years later, but with producers om McNulty and Marc Shmuger (We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks) on board it may finally have some firm legs under it. The character debuted in the pages of Dark Horse Presents, co-written by Mike Richardson and Mark Verheiden, and was set in the near future when the use of time travel is monitored by a specialized police force. The film version starred Jean-Claude Van Damme as a cop pitted against a crooked politician using time travel to his own ends. Easily clearing over $100M at the box office, it's considered a guilty pleasure by many, and a reboot would probably fit in with the current run of high-concept science fiction films finding success.

The film launched a terrible short-lived TV series and an equally awful sequel, Timecop 2: The Berlin Decision. Universal is reaching out to writers now who will be given free run to reimagine the entire concept. Unfortunately for Van Damme, there are no plans to have him be a part of it. He must be getting pretty frustrated at this point, as his most recognizable film, Bloodsport, is also being remade without his involvement.
