New Hard-Hitting Trailer for Keanu Reeves' 'Man of Tai Chi'
The idea of Keanu Reeves directing a martial arts film will probably be the subject of many jokes some day, if it isn't already. However there's no doubt that the teaser showcased some incredible, high-wire combat scenes perfected by Kill Bill fight choreographer Yuen Woo-Ping. Essentially it was a 60-second kung fu highlight reel, but now a fuller version has been released and it's pretty much the same thing.
Reeeves puts on his black hat as the wealthy head of an underground fighting tourney, with The Matrix stunt coordinator Tiger Hu Chen as a guy he wants to defeat spiritually and physically. Reeves' hokey zen dialogue is thankfully kept to a minimum in favor of what is some truly spectacular martial arts action. Basically it looks like Reeves came up with an idea to remake Bloodsport while playing Dead or Alive 5, and frankly I'm not going to complain about that. By adding renowned screen brawlers Iko Uwais (The Raid: Redemption), Karen Mok (Black Mask) and Simon Yam, Reeves is fully committed to making the supposed 40 minutes of fighting look as authentic as possible. Sign me up.
No release date for Man of Tai Chi yet, but hopefully we can get it by the end of the year. My fingers are crossed it arrives at the Virginia Film Festival the same way The Man With the Iron Fists did last year.
