"Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." Debrief: Episode 1.08, "The Well"

So here it is trill believers what we’ve been waiting for, the proof of concept with expanding the Marvel Cinematic Universe to television while more movies are being released. If you’re confused as to what I’m talking about it’s that this episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. crossing over with the very recent Marvel release of Thor: The Dark World. Now unlike the pilot, which had a lot of stuff from Iron Man 3 five months after it's release, this right here is fresh, so fresh that really I bet there are a lot of folks who haven’t even gotten to see Thor 2 yet. Good thing for them that the connection to the movie is very tenuous and doesn’t really have much to connect to the plot of the movie other than England.

The episode begins with Jemma essentially giving us an overview of what we know about the Asgardians, at least from the earth perspective, with clips from both Thor movies. Then we get to see our good old team of Agents we’ve watched for the previous 7 hours. Too be honest as a person that saw Thor 2 twice this first 3 minutes of the show is the only real connection to the movie. The team is in the big library that Jane Foster and Erik Selvig were in doing crazy marvel science in the last act of the movie. Basically cleaning up all the glass and random little parts that were still left from the giant spaceship. That’s all. That’s it.

From there we see a couple in Norway in a national park of some sort and cutting down a tree as they follow the directions from some old story. Inside the old tree is a broken metal rod with Asgardian markings all over it. The female grabs it first and it glows red. When the couple is encountered by two police officers she attacks one and kills him. Now our SHIELD team is in Norway figuring out what happened. They easily deduce it’s Asgardian. Since most don’t know much about Asgardians on earth Coulson brings the team to a professor who helped SHIELD way back when Mjolnir (Thor’s dope hammer) was in the desert.  Professor Elliot Randolph talks with Coulson and his team and tells them the story about a Asgardian solider that had a weapon that makes them berserk which gives the user more strength by tapping into a warriors rage.

With help from the Randolph they go to where the next piece of the weapon is located. Ward and Skye end up going for the next piece and end up running into Professor Randolph. Ward ends up holding the piece and being overcome with rage, which triggers a memory of a kid in a well. Everyone loses the weapon piece to the couple that now has an Asgardian believer army. They find out that Randolph is in fact the Asgardian from the story he told them.  On the way to the third piece the Nerds try to find out if the rod did anything to Ward and he snaps on the nerds and Skye (much in the way I feel about Skye I might add).  Coulson and Ward talk to Randolph as he explains his reasons and how the story came to be. Once at the third place Randolph goes to where he thinks it is and discovers they are too late as he is straight up stabbed in the heart.

What happens now is Coulson and the nerds attempt to save Randolph while Ward goes on to fight the leader of the group, take both of his pieces, and take out the entire army for the most part as we see the painful memory of Ward’s brother dying in well as he failed to help him. Now spent from full berserker rage beasting out, the Leader’s girlfriend enters the fray with the first piece in tow. Now instead of Ward fighting, Agent Melinda May tells him to fall back as she grabs both pieces, grunts and proceeds to beat the hell out of the woman while completing the weapon, a staff, in the process. Randolph survives because he’s an Asgardian and they heal fast. Skye and Ward have a close moment in a bar after which he turns her down for alone time. Back at the hotel May leaves her door open and Ward enters. Coulson has a weird dream about Tahiti as he’s starting to question how he came back to life.

Did you know:

Man really there isn’t much other than what I said in the beginning. There is a lot a Thor’s name thrown around. The Berserker stuff isn’t connected to that guy that fought Frankenstein’s Monster in the 70’s. So really not much.  In the end that was the well, it wasn’t bad and wasn’t great maybe it got a ratings boost since of all the Thor 2 marketing. See you next week.
