Baz Luhrmann May Direct Steven Spielberg-Produced 'Napoleon' for HBO

Coming off his glitzy and highly successful version of The Great Gatsby, Baz Luhrmann probably has his pick of any film he wants. And while he may have no shortage of offers from the major studios, he could be taking that gift for grandeur and using it to helm one of Stanley Kubrick's unfinished projects.

Earlier this year we learned that Steven Spielberg was set to produce a Napoleon miniseries for HBO, based on the extensive research Kubrick did for the screenplay back in 1961. Obviously the film never materialized as the studio cancelled it during the pre-production phase, and now it looks like Kubrick's take on the French military leader's life will finally be seen.

Deadline notes that "deals are a long way from being made" as neither HBO or Luhrmann is fully on board yet. But suffice it to say, the combo of Spielberg, Luhrmann, Kubrick, and HBO is mighty impressive so let's hope things come together soon, at least before Rupert Sanders gets moving on his Napoleon movie.
