Christian Bale Reflects on His Gravelly Batman Voice; Has Advice for Ben Affleck
Even though he'll probably never wear the Bat-suit ever again, it's going to be a long time before Christian Bale stops getting asked about his time as Batman. It's for good reason, as his version of the Dark Knight stands as arguably the most memorable, not just because of the universal acclaim of Christopher Nolan's films, but because of the distinctive characteristics Bale gave to the character. Probably the most notable of these is that gravelly voice, which some love and others think is a little silly. While talking to MTV about Scott Cooper's Out of the Furnace, Bale talks about the voice's origin and the reason he chose it....
Bale: "I got there. They put me in Val Kilmer's suit. It didn't even fit properly, and I stood in it and I went 'I feel like an idiot.' What kind of guy walks around, dressed like a bat? And is then going to go 'Hello, how are you? Just ignore that I'm dressed as a bat.' Of course, he's meant to be doing this," Bale said. "If you look at the history of the guy and the pain that he went through. I went 'I can't do this in a normal voice. I have to become a beast in order to sell this to myself. I went home that evening, and my wife said, 'How'd it go?' I went, 'I kind of did this.' And I showed her, and she went, 'Oh, you f---ed that one up, didn't you?' Thank God they went for it."
He also seemed to acknowledge his critics who have mocked the voice mercilessly for years by stating "The voice ain't for everybody", and suggesting Ben Affleck do his own thing in Zack Snyder's Batman vs. Superman flick. He also thinks it might be a good idea for Affleck to stay close to the bathroom stalls, telling Access Hollywood...
Bale: "I wish him all the best. He's a very experienced actor and filmmaker and he'll make it his own. Our thing's finished, we've always declared it was finished and it should be passed on to another actor and it will be again after him."
"The only thing I said to him is just make sure he can take a piss without anyone having to help him. Because it's a little bit humiliating, at least what I went through, when you have to have someone help you out of the costume. That was my main piece of advice for him."
How will it all turn out? Will Affleck find a comfortable way to take a wizz? We may never know the answer to that last question, but we can see how he performs in the role on July 17th 2015.
