Robert Rodriguez's Machete films were always going to be for a niche audience, so the $44M it earned (against a $10M budget) was something of a surprise. Truth be told it probably didn't warrant a sequel, and after Machete Kills couldn't even earn back its $20M cost, Rodriguez would probably agree. But the saddest thing to come out of it is that we may never see the kicked-around final chapter of the trilogy, the utterly ludicrous Machete Kills Again....In Space.
Arguably the best part of Machete Kills involved a teaser trailer for the film, which the story then spent most of its time trying to justify the need for. It's even more far out then one would think, with Machete in space swinging lightsabers, bagging sexy space chicks (can we get an Alexa Vega spinoff, please?), blasting a robot version of Justin Bieber, and battling an evil Leonardo DiCaprio stand-in.
