Vanessa Hudgens is Homeless and Pregnant in 'Gimme Shelter' Trailer
The last couple of years have seen Vanessa Hudgens doing everything in her power to break away from her Disney roots. She's donned a skimpy outfit and battled aliens in Sucker Punch; indulged in guns and drugs for Harmony Korine's Spring Breakers; and recently fought off an insane John Cusack in Frozen Ground, but now she's about to take on a role that's as far from her High School Musical days as possible.
A new trailer for Gimme Shelter has been released, and it's prefaced by a perky Hudgens, making for a startling contrast with the grimy, pierced, short-haired version that follows. She plays a troubled, pregnant teenager named Apple in need of some stability after fleeing her abusive mother and trying to survive on the streets. Unfortunately, after a childhood being shuffled between foster homes she doesn't exactly have the skills to get by alone, and finds support in a shelter for homeless teens. It's definitely a change of pace for Hudgens, and word during production was that she really threw herself into the role. Hopefully she took notes from a solid veteran cast that includes Rosario Dawson, James Earl Jones, Brendan Fraser, and Ann Dowd.
Written and directed by Ron Krauss, Gimme Shelter opens January 24th 2014.
