Winona Ryder Teases a Return for 'Beetlejuice 2'
An unlikely prospect just a few months ago, a Beetlejuice sequel does seem to be happening , twentyfive years after Tim Burton gave us what many consider to be a comedy classic. I disagree, but that's a topic for another day. Burton hired his Dark Shadows scribe Seth Grahame-Smith to pen a script, and he liked it so much he may return to direct it. All parties agreed that it couldn't move forward without Michael Keaton, and now that he's expressed a desire to reprise his role as the titular ghost, it sounds as if co-star Winona Ryder is on board to join him.
While talking to The Daily Beast, Ryder played coy about whether her Lydia character would be back for the sequel...
Ryder: “I’m kind of sworn to secrecy, but it sounds like it might be happening.”
She wouldn't be "sworn to secrecy" if nothing was going on, so it does appear that the film is moving forward and that Ryder will be a part of it in some way. She went on to confirm that the story will take place nearly three decades after the first movie....
Ryder: "It’s not a remake. It’s 27 years later. And I have to say, I love Lydia so much. She was such a huge part of me. I would really be interested in what she is doing 27 years later."
Ryder had been involved with Burton's first attempt to launch a sequel back in 1990, and the director is the primary reason she's coming now...
Ryder: "I would never go near [a sequel] if it was not Tim and Michael. Because those guys, I love."
Nothing has been made official but the pieces are clearly moving into position for Beetlejuice 2. If everything goes as expected, we may see filming begin next year for a likely release in 2015.
