Get Ready: Bryan Singer Announces 'X-men: Apocalypse' in 2016

Ever since X-men: First Class helped bring back Marvel's band of merry mutants, 20th Century Fox has been steadily rebuilding and expanding the franchise. Original X-men director Bryan Singer has been at the forefront of this charge, and he's currently putting the finishing touches on X-men: Days of Future Past which unites the old school X-men cast with the newer bunch. But where does it go from there? We already know an X-force movie is on the way, and Hugh Jackman will pop some claw in a sequel to The Wolverine, and now Singer has tweeted about a new X-men movie for 2016...

Box Office Mojo has since confirmed X-men: Apocalypse will arrive on May 27th 2016, with no details included, of course. So what conclusions can we draw from the title? Well, X-men fans know that Apocalypse is probably the mutants' greatest foe, even more dangerous than Magneto. He's a long-lived mutant, practically immortal, who lives by the code of 'survival of the fittest". While he's had a number of important storylines, he one he's most known for is the Age of Apocalypse. In that particular tale, Charles Xavier is murdered by his son Legion, which causes a ripple in the timeline that leads to a world where he never existed. Apocalypse rules this version of the world with the various members of the X-men altered in drastic ways. Considering 'Days of Future Past' is already messing around with the timeline, this could be the direction X-men: Apocalypse is headed.

Singer may have been the one to break the news but it doesn't necessarily mean he'll be the one behind the camera, but anything is possible at this early stage.
