Paramount Moves Forward on 'Beverly Hills Cop' Reboot and 'Top Gun 2'
While fans may not be all that excited about seeing long-dead classics Beverly Hills Cop and Top Gun revived, the only guy that really matters is producer Jerry Bruckheimer. He's been gung-ho on the idea for years, and we've seen numerous attempts to get a Beverly Hills cop sequel off the ground, including a failed try at a TV series. As for Top Gun 2, the most recent attempt was shelved with the tragic loss of Tony Scott. Bruckheimer hasn't given up, though, and now that he's parted way with Disney he's found a new partner in Paramount.
Deadline reports Bruckheimer and Paramount have a struck a 3-year partnership, with plans to reboot Beverly Hills Cop and move forward on Top Gun 2. Brett Ratner has been attached to a new 'Cop' film for some time, and he'll stay on board as director. Of course Eddie Murphy will return as fast-talking Detroit cop Axel Foley, partnering with Ratner again after they worked together on Tower Heist. Remember that movie? Me neither. The script is apparently being written now with the plan to take Foley "back to his Detroit roots", which sounds counter-productive for a film titled Beverly Hills Cop. Whatever. Ratner will get to work on this after he wraps up Hercules.
There isn't much in the way of new information on the Top Gun sequel except that Deadline seems convinced Tom Cruise will strap in as Maverick once again. Whether or not that remains true now that Cruise is busy with Mission: Impossible 5 remains to be seen.
