Craig Brewer to Direct Justin Timberlake-Produced Remake of 'The Idolmaker'
MGM continues to rifle through the attic digging up every 1980s film in their library for potential remakes, and probably the least recognizable of them all has taken a step forward. We've already seen Robocop and Poltergeist is coming next year, but awhile back we learned Justin Timberlake would be producing a remake of Taylor Hackford's 1980 musical, The Idolmaker. The project hadn't gone anywhere in awhile but now it's on with Craig Brewer directing.
Brewer, best known for musical films Hustle & Flow, Black Snake Moan, and Footloose (itself a remake), will direct The Idolmaker based on an Edward Di Lorenzo script. The original film starred Ray Sharkey as Vincent Vaccari, a loose version of real-life producer Bob Marucci who discovered Frankie Avalon, Fabian, and other musical acts.
Convincing Timberlake to star could be a problem as he's already set to produce and take a lead role in another music biopic, Spinning Gold. Right now there's no word on which of these projects will get moving first. [Variety]
