Comic books may have already taken over the big screen, but they are beginning to assert dominance on TV, as well. Warner Bros. already has a handful ongoing or in the works; we've got Constantine and Preacher series on the way, and of course Marvel has Agents of SHIELD. In the latter case, the ratings haven't exactly been great, but that's not stopping Disney and ABC from moving forward on another small screen project. And at the same time, one of today's most acclaimed Vertigo comics is in development, and it promises to be different than anything else on television.
First up is Marvel, who began work on a series based on the Agent Carter One-Shot starring Hayley Atwell. The character appeared in Captain America: The First Avenger and again in 'The Winter Soldier', so there's already a pretty good template for how it would go. Apparently, ABC was so happy with the first script they may forego the pilot and take it straight to series. If this happens expect it to be announced at the same time as a renewal order for Agents of SHIELD, which has hit its stride of late.
And then there's Scalped, the Vertigo Comics (an imprint of DC Comics/Warner Bros.) title created by Jason Aaron and artist R.M. Guera that ran for 60 issues between 2007-2012. WGN America has optioned the rights to bring it to series, which would make it the latest in a string of original content being developed at the network. Scalped takes place on a fictional Native American reservation riddled with crime and corruption. It's a little like Sundance's new series, Red Road (which stars an awesome Jason Momoa), but far seedier and more violent. Doug Jung (Banshee) will be adapting the script. [Deadline/THR]
