Doug Liman in Talks to Direct Remake of WWII Soccer Film, 'Victory'
World Cup fever is sweeping the world everywhere but here in America, however that's not going to stop Hollywood from making a bunch of soccer movies. Coming off rave reviews for his sci-fi action flick Edge of Tomorrow, Doug Liman is now eying a remake of the 1981 WWII soccer movie, Victory.
Victory was originally directed by John Huston and featured a ton of real-life soccer stars, including Pele himself, alongside Sylvester Stallone, Michael Caine, and Max Von Sydow. The film was a remake of a Hungarian film and centered on Allied POWs forced to compete in a soccer match against the prison guards, knowing they'll be met with death if victorious. The story is very loosely based on a real-life event that has come to be known as "The Death Match". It's one of the few movies on the sport I actually really enjoy despite it having one of the worst, most improbable endings ever. Hey, just like Edge of Tomorrow. Go figure.
Gavin O'Connor, who directed the uplifting U.S. Olympic hockey film Miracle, is on board to write the script making this an even more promising project. Next up for Liman is an adaptation of the Splinter Cell video game with Tom Hardy set to star. [THR]
