Can we just admit that Spike Lee is going through a decade-long rough patch in his career? Actually, that's a slump more than a rough patch. Last year he gave us the dreaded Oldboy remake and, while I enjoyed it well enough, most wish it never existed. Even when he went back to familiar urban territory with Red Hook Summer it failed to gain any attention, so what does one of the true indie stalwarts do when both the mainstream and art house crowd have rejected him? In Lee's case, he launched a successful Kickstarter campaign for Da Sweet Blood of Jesus, and the first image has arrived.
Lee has remained intentionally vague about the film, his first foray into the horror genre, except to say it's a new kind of love story about "human beings who are addicted to Blood. Funny, Sexy and Bloody." And the photo doesn't spill much, either, except to show star Zaraah Abrahams with Stephen Tyrone Williams creeping in the background.
While there's no official release date, Da Sweet Blood of Jesus will premiere on June 22nd at the American Black Film Festival. [Blackfilm]
