Interview: Jenny Slate and Gillian Robespierre of 'Obvious Child' Rebel Against "Abortion Comedy" Label
If there's one thing that exemplifies the raw, unfiltered style of multi-talented comedienne Jenny Slate, it was her brief stint on SNL when she dropped an F-bomb during her very first sketch. Oops. Suffice it to say she wasn't on the show much longer, but that hasn't stopped her from carving out a niche with scene-stealing performances on Parks & Recreation, The Kroll Show, and House of Lies.
Now she's making a big move to her first major leading role in a feature film, starring in the controversial festival darling, Obvious Child. All anyone could talk about was her hilarious and touching performance as Donna Stern, a raunchy stand-up comedian who shares her life on stage even as it's falling apart. In the span of a day she's dumped by her boyfriend, learns she is losing her job, and has a one-night-stand with a perfect stranger (Jake Lacy) that results in a pregnancy. And it is Donna's pregnancy that has earned the film some controversy for the stance on abortion first-time writer/director Gillian Robespierre takes, one that flies in the face of Hollywood's usual handling of the subject matter. What's obvious from the interview with Slate and Robespierre I conducted alongside my colleague +Tim Gordon , is that both women don't want Obvious Child to just be considered that "abortion movie". We also talk about Slate's future projects, the rejected Looney Tunes script she wrote, and more.
