Kristen Stewart Heads to Guantanamo Bay in First 'Camp X-Ray' Trailer

Kristen Stewart is someone whose  resume boasts some mighty impressive turns (Adventureland, Welcome to the Rileys, The Runaways), but more than any other she seems to be judged by her bigger studio projects. While we can all admit Twilight and Snow White and the Huntsman weren't exactly cinematic powerhouses they're the exception for her and not the norm. And that's why directors the caliber of Olivier Assayas (Clouds of Sils Maria) and Drake Doremus (Equals) keeping seeking her out. But no film promises to get Stewart more attention than the Guantanamo Bay drama, Camp X-Ray, which has finally revealed its first trailer.

While the idea of Stewart as a prison guard at Guantanamo Bay could sound like a set-up waiting for a punchline, the film is actually a serious-minded drama on the "War on Terror" and how it effects those we don't see in news reports. Directed by Peter Sattler, the film centers on a female guard assigned to a GITMO detention facility and the complicated relationship she forms with an inmate. Debuting at Sundance to largely mixed reviews, Stewart's performance managed to turn a lot of heads including mine. " Stewart's riveting, tough and vulnerable performance may be the finest of her career" was what I thought then, and it will be interesting to see how others react to it.

Also starring Payman Maadi, Lane Garrison, Julia Duffy and John Carroll Lynch, Camp X-Ray has an awards season slot on October 17th.
