Sequels are nothing new to the horror genre, in fact they tend to be over-burdened with them. But New Line Cinema doesn't care about any of that, and following up on the $300M (!!!) success of The Conjuring they've lined up a sequel for next year, preceded this fall by the spinoff prequel, Annabelle.
So what's Annabelle all about? It's basically an origin story centered on the possessed doll we saw locked away in The Conjuring. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga won't be appearing in this one as Annabelle Wallis, Alfre Woodard, and Ward Horton star in the spooky story of a couple terrorized by the doll after cultists leave an evil spirit in their home. Seriously. John R. Leonetti, The Conjuring's chief cinematographer, is making his directorial debut and seems to be establishing a distinct visual tone for the franchise.
Annabelle hits theaters on October 3rd.
