Matthew McConaughey Could Play Randall Flagg in 'The Stand'; Eyes 'Gold' with Stephen Gaghan

Coming off his Oscar win for Dallas Buyers Club and a potential Emmy award this weekend for his performance as Rust Cohle on True Detective, Matthew McConaughey has never been hotter. With Christopher Nolan's Interstellar also right around the corner, McConaughey pretty much has a run of any role he wants, and according to Deadline he's being sought for two major projects: Josh Boone's adaptation of Stephen King's The Stand, and the former Paul Haggis project, Gold.

Warner Bros. is apparently eying McConaughey to embody the demonic Randall Flagg in The Stand. Flagg is the personification of evil and makes frequent appearances in multiple King stories like The Dark Tower (also being developed into a movie), Hearts in Atlantis, and The Eyes of the Dragon. He debuted in The Stand, though, as leader of a radical sect in the wake of a plague that wipes out most of the human population. It doesn't appear that any offers have been made but if McConaughey wants the role he'll get it. He'd be perfect for it as Flagg is an immensely charismatic figure.

McConaughey is also may be teaming up with Stephen Gaghan (Syriana) on Gold, a film that has had Paul Haggis and Michael Mann attached to it at different stages. Haggis is still on board to produce, with Patrick Massett & John Zinman's screenplay centering on the 1993 scandal involving the Bre-X Mineral Corporation and the discovery of large amounts of gold in the Indonesian Jungle. Neither appears to be officially on board yet but the combination of Gaghan and McConaughey is an enticing one. Gaghan's next film is the crime drama Candy Store, with Jason Clarke, Christoph Waltz, Omar Sy, and Robert De Niro.
