Shane Black to Direct Long-Developing 'Remo Williams' Reboot, 'The Destroyer'
Coming off a weekend when The Expendables 3 bombed at the box office, is now really a good time to reboot something like Remo Williams? Back in 1985 Fred Ward was the unlikely lead for the potential action franchise in Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins, and it tanked spectacularly before becoming a cult favorite in the years since. Back in 2009 an effort began to reboot Remo Williams with little actual movement, but now it's finally coming to pass with Shane Black at the helm.
Black, who last helmed Iron Man 3 and is working on a Predator sequel, has been tapped to direct The Destroyer, the title springing from the series of Remo Williams novels penned by Warren Murphy and Richard Sapir. Williams is a tough guy Newark cop who is framed for a crime and his execution faked so he can secretly work as an agent of CURE, a secret organization created by President Kennedy. There's all sorts of mystical mumbo jumbo that goes along with that basic premise, like Williams being the avatar of the Hindu god, Shiva. No, really, that was a thing. Jim Uhls and James Mullaney will write the screenplay and hopefully they'll stick to the basics.
This does seem like the perfect project for a guy like Black, who created the action intense Lethal Weapon movies and the cop thriller, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. He's a fan of twin-barrelled action flicks and Remo Williams should be right in his wheelhouse.
