'Independence Day' Sequel Targets Liam Hemsworth for Lead Role

He's fought a totalitarian government in The Hunger Games, and fought side-by-side with legends in The Expendables 2, but now Liam Hemsworth may be taking on an alien invasion. The Wrap is reporting that an offer has been made to Hemsworth to star in Roland Emmerich's Independence Day sequel.

Titled ID Forever, the film is a long-awaited follow-up to the 1996 film which starred Will Smith as part of the human resistance against an alien threat. Smith won't be returning but old faces Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman will, and Michael B. Jordan has been rumored for a role in the past.

Hemsworth doesn't have the action-movie cred of his older bro, Chris, but this would go a long way in changing that...assuming the film is a hit. Twenty years is a long time to wait and without Smith's starpower it will be a much tougher sell this time. Emmerich will direct from a script rewritten by Carter Blanchard, with the plan for ID Forever to arrive on June 24th 2016.
